The conflict in Odesa in 2014
Recall that the European Court of Human Rights made a decision regarding the events of May 2, 2014, in Odesa, when clashes occurred between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian activists. The court found that Russian propaganda significantly contributed to the emergence of these events, but also emphasized that Ukraine committed violations and must pay compensations.
The conflict began on February 19, 2014, when pro-Russian forces brutally dispersed a protest against the murder of participants of the Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv. After this, Ukrainian patriots formed self-defense in the city and held a peaceful march demanding an end to aggression and occupation.
Over several days, pro-Russian forces set up at Kulikove Field, conducting actions and pursuing pro-Ukrainian activists. During the Peace March, which took place in the city center, there was a clash with people from Kulikove Field. The disagreement led to gunfire, resulting in several deaths.
The conflict escalated when the disagreement turned into a fire in the Trade Union House. More than 40 people died from gas poisoning and falling from a great height. The building was set ablaze by Molotov cocktails and other objects thrown at Ukrainian activists.
This incident became one of the tragic events in the conflict that continued in Odesa in 2014. The investigation of these events is ongoing to clarify the details and hold those responsible accountable.
