The parliamentary security service issued an urgent warning to everyone in the wing of the building to take cover in the nearest room, close and barricade the doors, and stay safe. Those outside this area are advised to stay away from it.
Ottawa police confirmed that the incident occurred around 3:00 PM local Time. The perpetrator has barricaded himself in the eastern wing area, which has been designated as dangerous. There have been no reports of injuries so far.
Significant police forces are present at the scene, and part of Wellington Street, which runs in front of Parliament Hill, has been closed. It is worth noting that Parliament is not in session, as a national election campaign is underway.
Law enforcement continues negotiations with the barricaded suspect.
Recall that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced early parliamentary elections scheduled for April 28. He stated: 'I just asked the Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, to dissolve Parliament and call elections on April 28. She agreed.'
According to the Prime Minister, the decision to hold earlier-than-planned elections is related to the need to quickly resolve issues in the country's economy and respond to US tariff policies. For this, he and his government need strong public support, which can only be secured through elections.
