A Giant Fault in the Earth's Crust Discovered in Turkey
Researchers in Turkey have discovered a giant fault in the Earth's crust at the intersection of the Arabian and Eurasian plates. Scientists believe that the process of subsiding of the Earth's crust has stopped, and instead, the rocks are rising. Remnants of the old ocean floor have separated, which affects the movement of tectonic plates.
60 million years ago, the plates were separated by an ocean, and then the oceanic plate sank into the Earth's mantle. Now scientists from the University of Göttingen are studying the processes occurring in this region.
In Iraq as well, the Earth's crust continues to sink, forming a basin. The fault is oriented towards expansion towards Iraq, but this should not have serious consequences for people, according to geologists. In the last 48 hours, there have been over 200 earthquakes in the Aegean Sea, the smallest of which had a magnitude of 1.3, while the largest had a magnitude of 4.8.
