The National Council of Switzerland is discussing a proposal from the Swiss People's Party about completely abolishing S protection status for Ukrainians. According to the party's conclusion, a significant part of Ukrainian territory is already stabilized and saved from hostilities, which allows these regions to be considered safe. This information is reported by the publication Glavkom based on data from NZZ.

In May, over 69,000 people in Switzerland had S protection status, but only about 2,600 people returned home from alternative protected migration. Cantons and municipalities are obliged to provide housing for those with S status, but two-thirds of Ukrainians still cannot provide for themselves. The introduction of new criteria may limit access to S status for those who were not in conflict or Russia-occupied regions.

Possible consequences of limiting S protection status for Ukrainians

Limiting S protection status for Ukrainians may not significantly reduce the need for shelter, as most refugees come from dangerous areas. Switzerland has faced criticism for its lack of solidarity compared to other European countries, as well as for its passivity in supporting Ukraine. In the event of further escalation of the refugee situation, Europe will once again need to respond to the challenge.

Additionally, a picturesque mountain village in the southwestern territory of Switzerland has offered a cash reward of 20,000 Swiss francs to those willing to move there. Ukraine is approaching a demographic crisis due to the emigration of young women, which adversely affects society.

According to a statement from the Swiss People's Party, part of the Ukrainian territory is already safe, thus the discussion on revoking S protection status for Ukrainians opens a discussion about the fate of Ukrainian refugees and potential consequences for Europe.
