The Bundestag approved a package of aid to Ukraine amounting to 11 billion euros

The Budget Committee of the Bundestag approved a new package of military aid to Ukraine worth over 11 billion euros. The decision will be effective over four years. This was reported by the publication Spiegel.

According to the decision, Ukraine will receive 3 billion euros this year and another 8.3 billion euros over the next three years. The package will provide air defense systems, ammunition, drones, and armored combat vehicles, including Marder infantry fighting vehicles.

For ammunition for the IRIS-T and Patriot air defense systems, 3 billion euros have been allocated, and the same amount for artillery shells. More than 900 million euros will be directed to the purchase of drones - 225 million euros this year and 700 million euros over the next three years.

The German Ministry of Finance justifies these expenses due to the unreliability of support for Ukraine from the US, which requires the involvement of European resources. Berlin also wants to demonstrate its readiness to provide extensive support to Ukraine to Moscow.

This decision became possible after the approval of amendments to the Constitution by the Bundestag, which weakened the 'debt brake' - a mechanism that limits public spending to the level of income. Previously, this package was blocked by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who opposed additional expenditures.

This is one of the last official decisions of the Bundestag before the new parliamentary session. On March 25, the new composition of the parliament will begin work, in which the largest factions will be the conservatives CDU/CSU, the far-right 'Alternative for Germany', and the Social Democrats SPD.
