A bill has been approved in Texas to create an office of efficiency similar to the Federal Government's Office of Management Efficiency established by President Donald Trump.
The SB14 bill establishes the Texas Office of Regulatory Efficiency, which, if approved by legislation, will attempt to optimize state regulations, reduce unnecessary rules, and promises to significantly reduce the size of the state apparatus.
"I prioritized the SB14 bill because the creation of the 'Office of Government Efficiency' by President Trump prompted me to look for ways Texas can save taxpayer and business money by reducing problematic regulations. The Texas miracle will continue into the 21st century as our common sense and conservative approach to regulation ensure the prosperity of Texans and a strong economy," said Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick on Wednesday.
An advisory panel on regulatory efficiency will also be created to provide advice to the governor's office and the Office of Efficiency. This panel will consist of representatives from regulated businesses, the public, professional license holders, higher education, and state agencies.
The bill also provides for increased public access to regulatory information by creating an interactive website where people can search for rules and information about state agencies by topic, activity, or NAICS code.
To ensure transparency, the Office of Efficiency will be required to annually send a report to the governor and the Legislative Budget Committee detailing its activities, findings, and recommendations.
Patrick claims this bill is necessary for Texans and will return money to taxpayers.
The bill is currently on its way to the Texas House Committee before it can be voted on by the Texas House of Representatives.
