Verdict Against Bayer
A court in the U.S. state of Georgia ordered Bayer to pay approximately $2.1 billion to the plaintiff, who claimed that the herbicide Roundup caused his cancer. This was stated by the plaintiff's legal firms.
This verdict, which Bayer stated it will appeal, became one of the largest legal rulings in the Roundup-related cases and is the latest failure for the group, which is one of the largest producers of seeds and pesticides in the world.
Payment for Disputed Claims
To resolve disputes related to the use of glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup, Bayer has already paid about $10 billion. More than 60,000 cases are pending, and the group has set aside $5.9 billion for legal reserves for these cases.
The German pharmaceutical and biotechnology group acquired Roundup as part of its 2018 purchase of Monsanto for $63 billion.
Massive Verdict
According to a press release sent to Reuters by the law firms Arnold & Itkin LLP and Kline & Specter PC, the verdict in Georgia includes $65 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages.
Bayer, in its statement, expressed disagreement with the jury's verdict, as it contradicts the overwhelming majority of scientific evidence and the opinion of regulatory authorities and their scientific assessments worldwide.
Appeal Arguments
Bayer believes it has strong arguments to file an appeal and overturn the verdict, as well as to reduce excessive and wrongful payments.
The statement also noted that in cases that received final verdicts, the total amount of payments was reduced by 90% compared to the initial jury decisions.
Threat to Stop Sales
Earlier this month, Bayer informed U.S. lawmakers that it may stop selling Roundup if they do not strengthen legal protections against lawsuits related to product liability. This was reported by Reuters, citing a financial analyst and an individual close to the situation.
