In Russia, the demand for valenki has sharply increased, and it's not due to the onset of winter.

Winter footwear shortage in Russia due to decreased imports from China
Russia is facing a shortage of winter footwear, particularly valenki, due to a reduction in imports from China. The demand for valenki has increased by almost 20% compared to last year, and Russians spent 2.41 billion rubles on their purchase over the past year, the highest figure in the last three years.
According to the Federal Customs Service, the demand for valenki has risen by 30.6% compared to 2022 and by 56.6% compared to 2021. At the same Time, the import of footwear and textile products to Russia has decreased by 9%, which occurred due to sanctions and complications in operations with banks in friendly countries, including China.

China has reduced its export volumes by 10.4% year-on-year, leading to an overall decrease in trade between Russia and China. Strengthening payment controls by Chinese banks, which check payments from countries with potentially Russian-origin funds, has further complicated the situation. Additionally, the Chinese authorities have imposed new export restrictions, causing the suspension of supplies of some goods to Russia.
It's also worth noting that the popularity of shawarma has increased in Russia as other dishes have become more expensive. Furthermore, the number of shoplifting incidents is on the rise. In 2022, thefts increased by 18-20%, and this trend may continue until the end of the current year. Most commonly, food products, alcohol, gourmet cheeses, meat products, and items from well-known brands are stolen, predominantly in small settlements.
The demand for shawarma has increased 2-3 times as other dishes have become more expensive.
