Direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul

Yesterday, May 16, the first direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia since 2022 took place, where the parties agreed on a large-scale prisoner exchange in the format of '1000 for 1000'. This initiative was proposed by Turkish officials at a Time when the situation seemed deadlocked.

A Turkish representative stated in a comment to CNN that the exchange involves children, civilians, and military personnel. Discussions of the conditions lasted longer with the Ukrainian side, while the Russians had to consult less.

The Turkish official emphasized that the negotiations went more positively than expected, and the parties avoided mutual accusations during the talks.

Preparation for the exchange and the return of Ukrainian soldiers

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that agreements are already in place, and the exchange will take place in the near future. At the same time, the Main Intelligence Directorate reported the beginning of technical preparations for the exchange, including work on lists of prisoners.

It should be noted that earlier 205 Ukrainian soldiers returned from Russian captivity.
