Ukrainians are facing issues with exchanging and using dollars. Some foreign bills will not be usable for their intended purpose in July 2025. It is necessary to pay attention to the appearance of the banknote and the year of issue.

Counterfeit and worn dollars

According to the directive of the National Bank, financial institutions must accept for exchange all genuine American currency bills issued after 1914. There should be no restrictions on the use of bills depending on the year of issue and series. Violators face hefty fines and loss of license.

It is prohibited to use counterfeit money. Among American currency bills, the denominations most commonly counterfeited are 100 and 50 dollars. The National Bank advises avoiding currency exchange transactions 'in hand' and to contact only licensed exchange points.

Should you keep savings in dollars

Doctor of Economic Sciences, Deputy Director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies Yaroslav Zhalilo recommends keeping part of the funds in dollars for the long term. It is also worth considering domestic government bonds as an alternative option.

What else should Ukrainians know

You should not store dollars in closets, books, or old clothes, as this may be a target for robbers. Increased humidity is also not suitable for storing cash. The National Bank classified foreign bills into three categories: genuine, severely worn, and counterfeit.

The presence of counterfeit or severely worn dollar bills may become a problem for Ukrainians in July 2025. The National Bank advises being cautious when storing cash and exchanging currency, as well as considering placing part of the savings in dollars or domestic government bonds as a safer alternative.
