Researchers at the University of Illinois are exploring the use of pomelo peel to create new tools. They are working on developing devices that can power small electronic devices and control movements.

The pomelo peel has a thin outer layer and a thick white inner layer. Researchers decided to use the spongy structure of the peel to create valuable products.

“If we can recycle the peel into more valuable products instead of just throwing it away, we can not only reduce waste from the production, consumption, and production of pomelo juice, but also create more value from food and agricultural waste,” said I-Chen Wang.

Researchers separated the peel from the pulp and removed the outer layer. Then they cut the peel into small pieces and stored them at different humidity levels.

Scientists used pomelo peel to create devices that convert mechanical energy into electricity. They combined pomelo peel biomass with plastic film. As a result, they were able to light LEDs and power a calculator or clock.

“We also found that pomelo peel can be very sensitive to force and frequency of force. This inspired us to develop sensing devices for biomechanical monitoring,” said I-Chen Wang.
