Record price for Magritte's painting
At Christie's auction in New York, a painting by Belgian artist René Magritte entitled 'Empire of Light' was sold for a record price of $121.2 million. It was expected to sell for $95 million. The previous record price at auction for Magritte was set in London when another painting from the 'Empire of Light' series was sold for $79.5 million. Over 16 years, Magritte created 17 paintings with this title, depicting a country house against a blue sky.
The painting sold at Christie's was the largest among all paintings from the 'Empire of Light' series and featured water reflections. This painting belonged to a private collector.
New record for works by Leonora Carrington
At Sotheby's auction, a sculpture by artist Leonora Carrington titled 'The Great Lady' was sold for $11.4 million, making it the highest price for her works at auction.
