On October 9, 1999, a match took place between the national teams of Ukraine and Russia, which became one of the most emotional in history. This match was the last in the qualifiers for the 2000 European Championship.
Ukraine and Russia started the qualifying cycle in the fall of 1998. Both teams had 19 points and shared first place before the last match. The world champions, France, held the third position with 18 points. A victory in this match would allow the team to advance to the European Championship.
Ukraine's national team won the first match with a score of 3:2. The second match ended in a 1:1 draw. This draw secured Ukraine's team a play-off berth, while Russia was eliminated from the tournament.
