The White House statement, published on Friday, claims that the March jobs report shows a 'stunning comeback' of the private sector under President Donald Trump, calling it 'a break from expectations' in the government's third month. It was announced that in March the U.S. added 228,000 jobs - almost 100,000 more than economists had expected, and this is the fourth month of highest growth in private jobs in the last two years. According to the White House, the growth in March was approximately twice that of the previous two months.Kira Kaban, head of strategic communications at Instawork, during an interview with Fox Business said: 'I think that the 228,000 jobs added this month surprised everyone a bit.' 'But, when looking at different sectors, especially transportation and warehousing, with the number of new jobs at 23,000, I think this is exactly what everyone was waiting for. We know that warehouses and ports across the country are trying to anticipate tariff rollbacks.'The latest Instawork labor market report showed wage growth for warehouse and logistics jobs of 2% in March as businesses accelerated hiring to stock up on supplies in light of expected new tariffs.According to the White House, the additional jobs included 23,700 in retail, 22,900 in transportation and warehousing, and 13,000 in construction.Kaban said that businesses are trying to plan ahead in terms of costs:'When you have such a supply increase, you need workers and staff to move products, either to retailers or to the end consumer,' she said. 'We are seeing similar growth in demand both from a workforce perspective and from a payroll perspective.'Private employment rose by a net of 209,000 jobs, significantly exceeding the previous red average of 12 months leading to the election (124,000 jobs). The number of full-subject employees increased by 459,000 compared to the previous month, and the workforce grew by 232,000 as more Americans sought work. One sector that caught Kaban's attention was the 43,000 job growth in the hospitality sector over the past month.'I think this is interesting since we are seeing more conservative consumer spending. From a store data perspective, we are seeing signs that wages in these sectors remain steady or slightly decrease, which indicates to us that they are planning for fewer visitors to their restaurants or dining establishments,' she said.Given that consumer spending is beginning to decrease, she said it is interesting that there is a significant number of jobs in this sector.'Maybe people are starting to go out now knowing that over the next few months they may be cutting back on purchases to determine how rising costs will affect their monthly budgets,' Kaban said.Although the Instawork report showed that most hourly workers work about 30 hours a week and additional work is still hard to find, nominal hourly wages have risen nearly 4% over the past year, the White House notes. The administration said the report highlights the resilience of the labor market as companies actively place jobs in the U.S. as part of Trump's trade and economic policies.Under President Joe Biden, government and government-equivalent employment comprised nearly three-quarters of new hiring. Under President Trump, this number fell to 42% in March.Although Instawork does not have data on federal employment, Kaban noted that the number of people with federal experience joining the platform has increased.'Whether this correlates with what you're seeing in the job report or with layoffs happening across federal government, I think it's going to take a little longer for us to see current trends,' she said. 'We are seeing the use of our platform in the federal space, but it's hard to say what is driving these numbers: what the job report shows, or already related to layoffs happening across the country.'
