Compared to Eastern European countries, the number of applications in Germany is still high. For example, Slovakia received only 37 applications, while Hungary received 22.
The decline in the number of asylum applications in Germany is linked to the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. The number of applications from Syria has decreased by 56%. There has also been a noticeable drop in the flow of migrants from Turkey (by 44%) and Colombia (by 45%).
Overall, in the first quarter of 2025, a total of 210,641 people applied for asylum in EU countries, Norway, and Switzerland.
The largest number of refugees arriving in the EU comes from Venezuela due to hyperinflation, massive unemployment, and the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro. The number of applications from Venezuela has increased by 44%. The number of applications from Ukraine (by 84%), China (by 87%), and India (by 56%) has also risen.
The European Commission has expressed concern about the situation in the Middle East, particularly in Syria, due to the persecution of Alawites following the fall of Assad's regime. There is a threat of new waves of refugees heading to Europe.
