Ukrainian literature celebrates the 130th anniversary of the birth of Maxim Rylsky - a poet, translator, and literary critic. He is one of the classics of Ukrainian literature, and his life was intense.
In 1931, on his birthday, Maxim Rylsky was arrested on charges of belonging to an 'Ukrainian counter-revolutionary organization' and was imprisoned for five months. He tried to assert that neoclassics was a literary school rather than a political organization, but this did not influence his verdict. He was also accused of 'disregarding communist ideology' and refusing proletarian culture.
After his release from prison, Rylsky published a collection 'The Sign of Scales' in 1932, which confirmed his loyalty to the Soviet authorities. This helped him avoid further repression, unlike other representatives of the neoclassical school.
Working as a teacher from 1919 to 1929, Rylsky taught in Romanivka in Zhytomyr region and in Kyiv. During this Time he was actively engaged in literary activities and joined the group of 'neoclassics.'
Marriage and mistress of Maxim Rylsky
Maxim Rylsky met his future wife, Kateryna, through her husband, Ivan Ochkurenko, in 1923. They later got married in 1926. Kateryna had a son, whom Rylsky accepted. In the poet's life, there was a period when he had an affair with another woman, Valeriya Poznanska, while his wife and children were evacuated. The children could not forgive their father for his cruelty.
Maxim Rylsky died in 1964 from pancreatic cancer. His contribution to world literature and culture remains significant, and his work is an important achievement of Ukrainian literature.

Maxim Georgiyovych Rylsky, the grandson of the famous poet, shared memories of his grandfather. He also recalls how his grandmother was always well-groomed and elegant, while his grandfather always looked gentlemanly.
The grandson also remembers how his grandfather always welcomed people warmly and helped friends, even after his arrest. He vividly recalls the beautifully decorated Rylsky house and the aromas from the kitchen.
